‘Warrior’ dog Xena finds a home
A “warrior” dog who was found neglected and malnourished with her five puppies last summer has found a home.
The Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced that Xena, a pitbull, was taken in by a family on Friday.
April Augustus, the consultant administrator at the SPCA, said that Xena, who was found nursing her newborns under a van last July, was the last of the six dogs to be adopted.
“We are more than thrilled that she was homed. Everybody worked hard to help her recover. We are overwhelmed with joy that she has been homed,” Ms Augustus said.
“Xena is a sweet girl and deserves a good home. People have concerns about pitbulls, but with love and care they can be rehomed.
“She has been with us since she was found. All her puppies were adopted. People always go for puppies — they see the cute face and it’s a wrap.”
When Xena was found, she was underweight and had a bad skin condition.
While the staff member who has spent the most time caring for her and knows most about her present condition was not available for comment yesterday, Ms Augustus said: “When Xena first came in, she was taken good care of — she had a great team looking after her. We had a trainer dealing with her on a daily basis, and she saw the vet.
“The pictures of her now speak for themselves — it was a long process to get her to good health and get her rehomed.
“She’s a beautiful dog.”
The charity announced the news of Xena’s adoption in a Facebook post on Saturday. In it, staff say: “You came to us in July 2022 so scared and thin, and we could see how hard life had been for you. But through all that hardship, your light shone through and in only a few weeks, with so much caring and ever so much love, our warrior thrived.
“Now, with lots of training and help from friends, our bonus mom, shopping expert and all-round good girl has finally found her forever home.”
When Xena was rescued last year, the SPCA posted two photographs of the animals and wrote: “Right from the beginning she cared for her puppies as best she could.
“To honour her warrior spirit, the staff have named her and her five pups after dog heroes in history.”
Ms Augustus said that the SPCA has many more animals in its care that need to be homed.
