Organisers and supporters of an annual fundraiser planted an olivewood tree in the Botanical Gardens yesterday to celebrate a volunteer’s decade of service to the event.

For ten years, Mandy Shailer has ensured the safe running of the End-to-End, organising road marshals and managing thousands of participants who walk, row, sail or cycle, with support from the Red Cross, Open Airways and St John Ambulance

Ms Shailer, who has stepped down as the charity’s deputy chair and its safety officer, said she felt honoured to have worked with the End-to-End team through the years.

“The tree planting means so much to me and whenever I walk in the Botanical Gardens I will remember my time and be inspired for what comes next.

“The End-to-End is such a significant event in the Bermuda community calendar and I look forward to returning as a participant in the years to come,” she said.

Anne Mello, End-to-End board chairwoman, said: “We appreciate Mandy’s joy, hard work and continuing support — it is everything that has made the event so special.

“Mandy’s dedication has left a lasting impact on the End to End and we wish her all the best as she embarks on her next journey.”

Nathan Frick will succeed Ms Shailer as the event’s safety officer.
