The big game may be at in St George’s this year, but teatime with a Cup Match flourish is returning to Somerset Cricket Club, with up to 200 seniors invited to dress up in their Cup Match best.

The Tee’l Pre Cup Match and Emancipation Day Tea for Seniors is becoming a summertime tradition thanks to Terry Lee Smith, who is bringing the event for free thanks to a string of sponsors.

It started in 2017, skipped a couple of years during the Covid-19 pandemic, and this year celebrates its fifth session.

This time the tea, at which organisers usually select a Miss Senior Cup Match, will crown “one for St George’s and one for Somerset”, Mr Smith said.

“It’s like a fun pageant. The ladies come in their Cup Match colours and just before the end we do our selection.”

Over-65s swap Cup Match stories in the spirit of friendly rivalry for the event, held on the Monday before Cup Match — which falls this year on July 31.

The bash, running from noon until 3pm, will feature saxophonist Desmond Smith with other entertainment planned.

Mr Smith added: “A senior has called to help me with decorations and sent me a photo of what she’s doing, paper flowers and flags to go with 20 tables. They are beautiful.”

The teatime proved a hit from its inception, with some of the older generation sharing deep ties with Bermuda’s biggest holiday.

Mr Smith takes to social media for support but a lot of community friends in the West End pitch in for food and beverages.

“Hotels and businesses have donated towards the event, which is how it has been able to take off,” he said.

“The first one had 76 people. Now it’s up to 200. It’s a special day.”

To beat the heat, enjoy company and swap Cup Match nostalgia, seniors should make a reservation by calling Rose Hart at 234-0430 or Cynthia Swan at 234-0278.
