The catch that still shakes the world
The fates aligned for an American visitor who went online to tell of how a determined Bermudian taxi driver insisted on bringing him to the home of cricket legend Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock.
The Reddit tale by Ahsan Aadil Shaikh recounts the “unimaginable” when Jimmy Tweed, the “greatest taxi driver of all time” gave him a ride to his cruise ship in Dockyard on Sunday.
“Upon learning I was a cricket fan, he was quick to ask if I knew anything about Bermuda’s cricket team,” the guest from Worcester, Massachusetts, wrote.
“I shared with him how I vividly remember them participating in the 2007 World Cup and of course Dwayne Leverock’s insane one-handed diving catch during that very tournament.”
Mr Leverock riveted viewers with his one-handed catch against the India team in the ICC Cricket World Cup match in Trinidad.
“The moment Jimmy heard me mention 2007 and Leverock, his eyes lit up, followed by instant disbelief that the world outside their tiny island knew about Leverock’s heroics.”
The cabbie, himself a prominent footballer with Devonshire Colts in the 1980s, promptly rang his wife to track down Mr Leverock’s number, leaving his passenger unsure if he was getting pranked.
He added there was “no way we were going to get an international cricketer’s phone number in that time frame, let alone convince him to meet a total stranger”.
Mr Tweed was “overjoyed” to track the number down — and soon had the man himself on speakerphone.
“Did I have this on my 2023 bingo card?” Mr Shaikh wrote. “Absolutely not.”
The driver told the cricketer to get ready for a guest — then asked for his address.
“I was fully expecting Leverock to hang up after that introductory spiel, but to my utmost surprise, not only did he say hi to me on speakerphone, he also gave us his home address and asked that we swing by.
“It was at this moment that I realised there were no prank cameras in the car, and this was just Bermuda’s way of welcoming me, a nobody, to their heavenly island.”
Ten minutes later, the visitor got to meet Mr Leverock, who “did not waste any time in making me feel at home by greeting me with the widest smile ever”.
He added: “So humble. So down-to-earth. All he wanted to talk about was my trip, but all I wanted to talk about was him and the diving catch that shook the world.”
The two re-enacted the catch outside Mr Leverock’s home in Pembroke and the former cricketer secured his unexpected guest’s address to send a gift.
“Dwayne Leverock, Jimmy Tweed, and the people of Bermuda, if you’re reading this, please know you all are absolute legends on and off the ground, and the cricketing world can’t wait to have you back on the field at the big stage.
“Sending love and more one-handed diving catches your way.”
Mr Leverock, who these days acts as chairman of the national selection committee and coaches women’s cricket, told The Royal Gazette he was only too happy to please a guest on the island.
“It’s not the first time; I get it often,” he added.
“Taxi drivers will call and say they have people here that want to meet me. They’ve been to my job, to my house, different points on the island.
“Someone’s come all this way, I have no problem meeting with them.”
