Charity drive swings into gear after raising more than $2m

The Birdies for Charity initiative will tee off again this year, organisers of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship said today.

The drive, aimed at harnessing the annual golf tournament for the benefit of good causes, aided more than 40 charities across the island last year and since its launch in 2019 has raised in excess of $2 million.

Danielle Carrera, tournament director, said: “2022 was the most successful year to date of the Birdies for Charity programme.

“In total, over $1.1 million was raised last year and we look forward to continuing the growth of the programme and the impact to Bermuda.”

A spokesman said: “The Butterfield Bermuda Championship Birdies for Charity is a matching fund programme where the tournament sponsors match fundraising efforts made by participating charities for a six-month period, starting in July to the end of November.

“Organisations receive every penny they raise, plus up to a 10 per cent match on every donation.”

The initiative is supported by Butterfield Bank, Bermuda Tourism Authority, Mastercard, Digicel Business, the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club, BF&M, and Somerset Re.
