Skyport reminder over Cup Match camping

Campers are being warned about airport restrictions (File photograph)

Skyport has urged Cup Match campers who decide to set up near LF Wade International Airport to be careful not to break security rules.

A Skyport spokeswoman said: “Parking or erecting structures within three metres of the airport's perimeter fencing is strictly prohibited by law, as it poses a safety and security risk.

“Strict adherence to these regulations is crucial for maintaining the airport's security and ensuring public safety. Noncompliance may lead to property removal.

“Recognising that camping along Kindley Field Road is a beloved Cup Match tradition for many, Skyport asks that all campers and the public at large be particularly mindful of these safety and security restrictions over the holiday period, and wishes everyone an enjoyable Cup Match weekend.”

The Ministry of Public Works recently reminded the public about the rules of camping in public parks over the holiday period.

Permits are required to camp at one of the island’s three designated camp grounds — Ferry Point Park, Horseshoe and Higgs Islands in St George’s and Chaplin Bay in Warwick — at any time between May 3 and October 15. These permits cost $15 per night.

A spokesman added that people planning to camp in other areas during the holiday could pitch their tents on Tuesday, August 1, but will not be allowed to camp out until Wednesday at 9.30am.

Tents and ropes used to secure camps at any site on Monday would be removed by the Department of Parks. Campers are also prohibited from marking spots in the area with spray paint.

Park rangers will be on duty to assist campers from 9.30am to 10pm on August 2, between 8am and 7pm on the August 3 and 4 and from 9.30am until 6pm August 5 and 6.

Parks employees will also manage traffic at West Whale Bay, Clearwater Beach, Cooper’s Island, Warwick Long Bay and Elbow beach during the holiday.

No vehicles will be allowed inside the parks during this period and drivers should use the designated parking spaces.
