A 73-year-old man has died after suffering a “medical episode” as he was in the water at Shelly Bay Beach.

Police said that individuals at the scene tried to resuscitate the man, but despite their efforts he was later pronounced dead.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3pm today, Friday, August 4, police and other first responders were dispatched to Shelly Bay Beach following reports that a male had been pulled out of the water.

“Reports are the man was standing in waist deep water when he appeared to have suffered a medical episode and went under water before he was pulled out by nearby individuals who began CPR until the arrival of EMTs who took over.

“The 73-year-old victim was subsequently transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Next of kin have been informed. Foul play is not suspected.”
