City to repair disowned wall

The Royal Gazette began making inquiries close to a month ago about this crumbling rock face on Court Street, Hamilton. The Government claimed maintenance was the responsibility of the City of Hamilton, which said it was the responsibility of the Government (Photograph by Sarah Lagan)

The City of Hamilton has said it would monitor and address the maintenance of a damaged wall after the matter of responsibility for maintaining the wall reached an impasse.

The Royal Gazette began making inquiries about a month ago after spotting a large rock that had crashed on to the sidewalk on Court Street outside of Sessions House.

The Government said it was the responsibility of the City of Hamilton but the Corporation insisted it was that of the Government.

A spokeswoman for the City of Hamilton said yesterday: “We are working on a solution to address the maintenance of this rock cut.

“If, at any time, it is deemed to be a potential danger to the public, the wall will be addressed, and the sidewalk closed while work is undertaken.”

The City of Hamilton has said the wall was the property of the Government and the problem has arisen because of unattended tree roots, and therefore, the Government should carry out any necessary remedial works.

However, the Ministry of Public Works said the work would be the responsibility of the City of Hamilton because of excavation works it carried out in the distant past.

The Ministry of Public Works did not respond to further questions by press time.
