Bermuda’s domain registrar has delayed its move to a new platform, creating issues for some users seeking to complete routine transactions on the site.

All accounts registered with the Bermuda Network Information Centre were supposed to transition to a new portal at the beginning of this month.

However, a message on Bermuda NIC’s website yesterday said “unavoidable circumstances” caused this move to be “delayed until further notice”.

Bermuda NIC registers and renews .bm, .com.bm, .org.bm, .net.bm, and .edu.bm domains. It was established in 2016.

The register charges $100 for new domains and $65 for renewals.

One domain user, who wishes to remain anonymous, received e-mails counting down the days before the new portal would become active up until July 31.

He was informed the move would be delayed on August 1, the day the new platform was supposed to be online and working.

This postponement left the man unable to complete several actions on Bermuda NIC’s site — including registering or renewing their domains, updating contact information or changing nameservers.

Users can still complete these actions by e-mailing dnsmanager@gov.bm or by calling 297-7708.

Bermuda NIC told users this month: “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.

“We’re working diligently to ensure that we complete the migration as soon as feasible.

“We will keep you updated with the new date of migration as soon as it’s determined.”

This is not the first time the platform has encountered problems. Some domains expired in 2017 without notice to users, leading several local websites and e-mail accounts to go down.

When the Electronic Communications Amendment Act 2015, which introduced the fee for the registration of Bermuda domains, was discussed by politicians seven years ago, concerns were raised about the implementation.
