Flushing-water disruption delayed owing to Franklin
Planned disruption to the flushing-water supply in parts of St George’s will be postponed until at least Tuesday, the public works ministry said.
The work is needed to allow for water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades.
A spokeswoman explained: “The Ministry of Public Works would like to update residents and stakeholders in St George's about a planned temporary disruption in the flushing (non-potable) water supply provided by the Water and Sewage Section.
“The disruption had been planned to begin on Monday, August 28, 2023.
“However, due to the possibility of Tropical Storm Franklin affecting the island early next week, the work will commence on Tuesday, August 29, depending on the situation post-storm.
“Should the scheduled disruption begin on Tuesday, we expect it to last until Friday, September 1, 2023.
“If the works cannot start on Tuesday, August 29, due to the storm's effects, the works' commencement will be postponed until Tuesday, September 5, 2023 and be completed by Friday, September 8, 2023.”
She added that the work was necessary “to facilitate crucial water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades in the St George’s and Southside areas”.

The spokeswoman said: “The works being carried out are associated with a legacy sanitary water system installed by the British military before 1943 to service its installations and barracks.
“Very few as-built drawings exist, and there have been no material upgrades since then.”
She added that the Ministry of Public Works might be unaware of some homes or other buildings connected to and serviced by the system.
The spokeswoman said: “For this reason, the ministry would ask any residence or facility that loses service during the period indicated to contact the Water and Sewage Section by e-mail at water@gov.bm or telephone at 278-0570 and provide the address, type of building — residence, commercial building, facility or institution — and contact number, so that the nominated contact person can be notified directly concerning the flushing water service moving forward.”
