The overhang at a Hamilton Parish petrol station is being replaced as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Franklin.

Joseph Marable, the manager at Esso Crawl Hill station, said the storm, which passed 150 miles northwest of the island last week, loosened and cracked part of the overhang’s roof.

He said: “We braced it after [the hurricane] and it held up OK during Storm Idalia, but it now needs to be replaced.”

Workers assessed the damage and began taking the structure down on Tuesday. No fuel will be sold from the station until this is completed.

However, Mr Marable could not confirm how long the work might take.

He explained: “It is being taken down for safety reasons, as that is our top priority, I cannot emphasise that enough.”
