‘Exemplary leadership’ earns Michael DeLeon public service award
A public transport worker who went above and beyond to keep buses running this summer has received the August Public Service Excellence Award.
Michael DeLeon, the operations manager at the Department of Public Transport, was recognised this week with the award, intended to honour public officers for their accomplishments.
Mr DeLeon said he was “elated and extremely grateful” to receive the award, thanking the Government and Jonelle Christopher, the acting director of the DPT.
“I am proud to know that my dedication and hard work is making a positive impact on those I work with,” he said.
Mr DeLeon was credited with taking proactive measures in the face of manpower challenges in the department, volunteering to cover the most difficult shifts and assignments, working long hours and rallying assistant managers to cover the less challenging shifts.
He also identified an opportunity to provide two-way radios for the fuelling team, an initiative that improved operations and highlighted his commitment to finding innovative solutions to complex challenges.
Ms Christopher added: “His efforts to manage the morale of his team by proactively addressing their needs are a testament to his dedication to service excellence.
“Mr DeLeon is always coaching his team and he’s skilled at articulating ideas at both grass roots and professional levels.
“His charismatic persona has helped foster a more inspiring working environment at our department, where individuals are motivated to develop themselves and excel.”
David Burt, the Premier, congratulated Mr DeLeon for his “exemplary leadership”.
“He has proven himself a true asset to the Department of Public Transportation and the Bermuda community, and I thank him for his unwavering commitment to service excellence,” he said.
Cherie Whitter, the Acting Head of the Public Service, said she was thrilled to present Mr DeLeon with the award.
“His passion for his team, creative problem-solving skills and exceptional ability to work with others have set a remarkable example for all public officers. We are extremely proud to have him,” she said.
