Students are invited to show their creativity in a photography contest that honours an Australian media mogul and Bermuda resident.

The Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: Your Eyes on Bermuda, launched last week.

It is a joint project from the National Museum of Bermuda and the late Joy Grundy.

An NMB spokeswoman said: “Now in its fifth year, the competition welcomes all primary, middle and high school students to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment in memory of Dr Reg Grundy.

“Open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7 to18, the competition asks students who currently reside in Bermuda to photograph a theme of interest: People of Bermuda, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Wildlife and Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.”

She explained that Dr Grundy remained a key figure in the history of international television production and distribution.

The spokeswoman said: “Though Dr Grundy’s life was dedicated to television, wildlife photography became his passionate avocation.

“As an Australian-Bermudian, he cherished his island home and was enchanted by the Bermuda longtail for the last 35 years of his life.

“He spent long hours photographing longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park, from his boat in Castle Harbour or up at St David’s Battery, with camera raised, peering out to sea.

“His enthusiasm for wildlife photography took him to every continent, searching for the ‘right shot’ with his wife, Joy, née Chambers — the well-known author — at his side.”

The judges of this year’s entries will be Deborah Atwood, a curator at the NMB;, Chinni Mahadevan, a curator at the Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries; and Chris Burville, an island photographer.

Elena Strong, the NMB’s executive director, said: “Thank you to the late Mrs Joy Grundy and her team, and our annual, local sponsors: A F Smith, Clarien Bank and the Phoenix Stores who make this competition possible.

“Each year, we are more and more impressed with the number and calibre of submissions.

“This competition is an opportunity for students to develop their creativity, patience, visual literacy skills and ability to closely look at the world around them in a unique way.”

Students must submit photos in the following age groups: 7 to 10, 11 to 14, or 15 to 18.

Entries can be in any or all of the themes but only one photograph per theme will be accepted.

File sizes should be no less than 1MB and no more than 50MB. The format of entries should be JPEG online and the resolution a minimum of 300 dpi.

The NMB spokeswoman added: “In honouring Dr Grundy’s signature style, all images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image-editing software or digital enhancements.”

Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the museum and published in MariTimes, NMB’s annual magazine, as well as the on the NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites.

Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank and gift certificates at Phoenix Stores. The Best in Show will win a Canon DSLR camera with accessories.

The spokeswoman said: “In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions, based on percentage, will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to A F Smith.

“This year, to honour what would have been Dr Grundy’s 100th birthday, a special prize will be given to every 100th submission.”

Deadlines for submissions are: November 1 for the 7-to-10 age group; November 2 for 11 to 14s; and November 3 for the 15-to-18 age group.

Submissions may be made online at nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition.

An awards ceremony will be held on December 7.
