Family exhibition opens at National Museum of Bermuda
A new exhibit by local artist Jayde Gibbons opened its doors at the National Museum of Bermuda on Friday.
Ms Gibbons’s exhibit, Family (Fam, I Love You), focuses on the power of family and community in the face of sorrow and bereavement.
Deborah Atwood, NMB curator, said: “Jayde’s images hold immense social significance that transcend cultural boundaries, serving as cultural retentions that contribute to identity formation, cultural resilience and the preservation of heritage, especially within African, Afro-Bermudian and other African diaspora communities.
“Family is an important continuation of NMB programming and offers a contemporary perspective on shared human experiences and documents our present-day cultural heritage.”
A museum spokeswoman said the show is Ms Gibbons’ response to the museum’s Bermuda Family Scrapbook project, which invites anyone who lives or has lived in Bermuda to submit their historic family photographs and associated personal narratives.
“The scrapbook will help build a better understanding of the varied experiences of daily life in Bermuda and our Atlantic world connections,” the spokeswoman added.
Ms Gibbons gave an artist talk on Sunday, discussing her work and creative process, with a second talk scheduled to take place on October 29 at the Commissioner’s House at the museum.
The talk will begin at 11.30am and is free with the cost of museum admission, which is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and children under 16 and free for NMB members.
