Public invited to Warwick Camp for regiment open house
The Royal Bermuda Regiment will host an open house at Warwick Camp on Saturday to give the public a taste of military life.
The event, aimed at potential recruits and the family and friends of soldiers, will include demonstrations of weapons exercises and drill displays.
Major Duncan Simons, the Commanding Officer of B Company, is organising the event to educate the community on RBR operations and hopefully increase its ranks.
He said: “Saturday is an opportunity for the community to come check us out, for soldiers to bring their friends and family and for former soldiers to come back and see how much their regiment has changed over the years.
“As a 100 per cent volunteer unit, we are dependent on people choosing to serve and it is really important that folks have the opportunity to see what we are about, see what we offer and ask lots of questions so that they can make informed decisions.”
Major Simons added: “I think that everyone can find a role that is a good fit for them — from coastguard divers to hurricane relief teams, public order and internal security specialists, and our celebrated marching band, as well as medics, chefs, mechanics and other support staff in our logistics unit — we have positions that cover a range of interests.
“Our best advocates are our members, so we invite everyone to join us on Saturday so that they may see and hear for themselves just what it is that makes the regiment enriching, fun and rewarding.”
The open house will take attendees on a tour of the camp, allow them to visit a barrack room and learn about the two-week training course that new recruits undergo.
Guests can also see the work carried out by regiment’s immediate response teams that act after a hurricane, and watch a presentation on the commissioning course, which soldiers take overseas to become officers.
The RBR Band and Corps of Drums will perform at the open house.
Members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard will explain what their teams do on a daily basis and what qualifications their crews can earn.
Display stands will also be available and include demonstrations on living in the field and the regiment’s motor transport unit.
Activities for children will be offered and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Association, a network for past and present soldiers, will also have members on hand.
• The open house will take place on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm
