Bids invited to fix wall at Paget lights
Approved contractors have been invited to submit bids for work to repair a patch of wall at Paget stoplights.
A request for quotations issued by the Government said that deterioration of the wall was putting the Middle Road and South Road junction at risk.
It explained: “This is a restricted procurement for general contractors that have been approved by the vendor prequalification programme to carry out repair works to a rock cut and rebuild a retaining wall at Paget lights, Paget.
“The general contractor shall supply all adequate and competent labour, supervision, tools and equipment, installed and consumable materials, and every item of expense necessary to complete the construction project.”
Non-binding quotations were invited for the work, which is expected to take place next year.
The RFQ explained: “The length of rock face under consideration has begun to break apart, undermining the existing parapet wall and putting the adjoining Middle/South Road junction at risk.
“The contractor should provide a clear traffic-control plan for the project and carry out works in strict accordance with the Bermuda Occupational Safety and Health Act 1982 and Occupation Safety and Health Regulations of 2009.”
It added: “The sidewalk along the specified length of road/wall was installed under five years ago and is in good condition.
“To the best of their abilities, the contractor is to retain the existing curbs and protect them throughout the length of the project.”
The RFQ said that the contractor was expected to excavate soil and vegetation at the “upper parapet level to relieve pressures acting on the existing wall”.
As far as possible, the contractor is to save blocks from the wall that will be demolished, so that they can be reused.
The RFQ said: “The rockface is to be cut and smoothed over the specified length to allow adequate room for the installation of the new wall.”
It added that the contractor is to excavate the sidewalk in preparation for the project.
The job will involve the construction of reinforced concrete footing, which must be left for seven days to harden before work starts on building the new block wall.
A deadline of 3pm on December 14 was set for the RFQ, which was issued on November 16 and can be found on the procurement notices page of the government website.
A request for quotations was issued by the Government for purchase of a minibus.
It said: “The Ministry of Public Works, Department of Works and Engineering is responsible for procuring all vehicles for the Government of Bermuda.
“The fleet of over 600 vehicles includes motorcycles, cars, trucks and various medium and heavy-duty vehicles.
“The Government has an immediate need for one new passenger van that will hold 16 passengers.”
Potential vendors were advised that the vehicle must be right-hand drive and that the seating should accommodate two wheelchair passengers.
The public works ministry said last week: “The bus is a replacement vehicle for the Sylvia Richardson Care Facility.”
A submission deadline of 3pm on December 8 was set for the RFQ, which was issued on November 20 and posted on the government procurement notices page online.
