Caricom may have been hit by cyberattack
The website for the Caribbean Community bloc has crashed, with its headquarters advising that “certain online applications have been breached”.
Based in Georgetown, Guyana, the secretariat of the 15-member association said that its “website and other applications are offline until further notice” but that telephone and e-mail were unaffected.
Rather than opening to the usual homepage, caricom.org only displays a message in unformatted html advising viewers of the problem. An e-mail address and phone number are listed, and the number rings once before disconnecting.
The Gleaner, of Jamaica, reported yesterday that sources in the organisation would neither “confirm nor deny” that the breaches were the result of hackers.
Bermuda, which has been an associate member of Caricom for 20 years, could move towards full membership, according to the 2023-24 Throne Speech.
Caricom’s website did not specify which services had been breached or when services were expected to resume.
The breaches follow a significant cyberattack on September 20 that knocked out the Bermuda Government’s online services, with the Government initially stating that other countries had been hit.
