Furbert celebrates declaration of human rights
Two landmark human rights documents celebrate milestone anniversaries this year.
It has been 75 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted and 70 years since the European Convention on Human Rights came into effect.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said the UDHR “is a testament to the shared values that unite us as a global community, regardless of our differences.
“In Bermuda, these principles form the cornerstone of our society, guiding us in fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect and empathy."
A joint statement from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda and the Human Rights Commission called the UDHR a “landmark document that enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being — regardless of race, ethnicity, colour, sex, gender and sexual identity, age, disability, religion, political or other opinion, language, national or social origin, property, birth or other identity category”.
Ms Furbert added that changing how family is defined within Bermuda’s Human Rights Act, which is mentioned in this year’s Throne Speech, will “ensure that our legislation evolves with the changing dynamics of our society, embracing diverse family structures and protecting the rights of every individual within them."
The minister said the work of the HRC and other organisations are an “inspiration to us all”.
She added: “Together, we reaffirm our pledge to stand as champions of human rights, ensuring that every Bermudian enjoys the freedoms and protections they rightfully deserve."
Ms Furbert then highlighted World Human Rights Day, which was held on December 10.
She said: “As we recognise World Human Rights Day, may our collective focus be on promoting inclusivity, respect and equality in every facet of our community.
“Together, let us continue to build a Bermuda where the rights of every individual are upheld and cherished."
