Photographs by schoolchildren impress competition judges
An “impressive group of talented young photographers” showed their skills when they entered a photography competition in memory of Australian-Bermudian media mogul Reg Grundy.
The 27 winners have been announced and a special awards ceremony was held at the National Museum of Bermuda on December 7.
It was attended by more than 115 students, teachers, family members, sponsors and judges.
The competition was established by Dr Grundy’s wife, the late Joy Grundy, and the NMB in 2019.
Josiah Tull, 9, a Bermuda Institute pupil, was this year awarded Best in Show and presented with a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a monopod.
Elena Strong, the NMB executive director, said: “It is fantastic to see how much the competition has grown and the calibre of photos has increased over the past five years.
“Congratulations to everyone who submitted — we have an impressive group of talented young photographers in Bermuda.
“The competition is a great opportunity for students to develop their creativity, patience, visual literacy and ability to closely look at the world around them in a unique way, and share their perspective through art.
“For those who entered but were not selected as finalists, I encourage you to continue being curious, take photographs and share your point of view by submitting again next year.”
Dr Grundy is a prominent figure in the history of international television production and distribution.
He grew a passion for nature photography and spent much time photographing longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park in Warwick.
The competition is open to all photography enthusiasts on the island aged between 7 and 18, and aims to inspire the next generation of photographers while promoting an appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment.
The judging panel included Chris Burville, a local photographer, Deborah Atwood, an NMB curator, and Chinni Mahadevan, a Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator.
They had the challenging task of choosing 27 finalists out of almost 600 submissions from 23 local schools.
Pupils submitted photos under the themes People of Bermuda, Bermuda Buildings and Bermuda Wildlife and Nature in three age categories — 7 to 10, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18.
Anthony Richardson, an MP, and Arianna Hodgson, a senator, officially opened the Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition prize giving and exhibit.
Ms Strong thanked Mrs Grundy and sponsors AF Smith, Phoenix Stores and Clarien Bank.
Winners and runners-up photos are on display on the second floor of the Commissioner’s House at NMB and at nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition/.
