St George prepares for New Year’s Eve celebrations

Bermuda tradition: the New Year’s Eve onion hangs in front of St George Towne Hall (Photograph supplied)

An East End tradition is on once again for merrymakers to ring in the new year.

Candy-Lee Foggo, St George town manager, said the annual event, to be held on December 31 in King’s Square, will feature free entertainment, local vendors and the famous onion drop.

She explained: “St George is proud to have its own onion, emblazoned with shiny lights, like New York City has a big crystal apple.

“For the first time in a long while, the toll of the town clock will ring out at the stroke of midnight from St Peter’s Church.”

Parking on Ordnance Island, King’s Square and Water Street will be limited as the town prepares for the event, and Water Street will be closed to all traffic during the celebration.

Garbage from the holiday will be collected in the town on January 2.

Vendors who wish to sell their offerings during the celebration can contact the Corporation of St George at 278-7700 and talk to Rennika Denbrook, the event’s operations and logistics co-ordinator.

Parking is available at Tiger Bay for free during the event, which will take place from 8.30pm to 1am.
