A fire that appeared to be fanned by strong winds was reported shortly after 6pm last night in the dump outside LF Wade International Airport.

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service reported several hours later that the fire had been contained.

Fire trucks from the Clearwater Station found an area roughly 100ft by 100ft engulfed in flames. Nine vehicles tackled the blaze.

The BFRS said many in the community had seen the fire and were possibly affected, adding: “Despite the appearance of the flames, the public can rest assured that the blaze is under control.”

Work continued as of 11pm to prevent any spread into the surroundings and smoke could still be seen coming from the site this morning.

A forensic fire investigation can start only once the fire has been completely extinguished.

A spokesman added: “We are mindful of the interest in specific details.

“However, we will provide updates when we are in a position to do so.”
