Airport operations not affected by fire
A fire at the Airport Waste Management Facility on Tuesday night did not disrupt flights to or from the airport.
Skyport said yesterday that despite the pillar of smoke caused by the blaze, it had “little impact” on operations at LF Wade International Airport.
Skyport said that a number of flights proceeded after the fire was reported at 6pm on Tuesday without interruption while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
“There were five flights that operated safely without incident, including a private jet and medevac arrival and BermudAir’s departing flight to Fort Lauderdale at 6.11pm and CargoJet’s departing flight to Newark at 7.55pm.
“American Airlines flight 308 arrived safely from Miami International Airport at approximately 10.25pm. BermudAir flight 452 from Fort Lauderdale arrived at 12.10am.”
The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service said that when firefighters arrived at the scene on Tuesday, they found a 100sq ft area engulfed in flames.
Work to prevent the spread of the fire continued throughout the night, with smoke still seen rising from the site yesterday morning.
The Ministry of Public Works said that the site was kept closed yesterday and that a safety assessment was under way.
The ministry said in a statement: “An update will be provided in due course. The Ministry of Public Works hopes the public will understand the need to ensure the facility is safe before allowing truck entry.
“Once the site assessment is completed, we will reopen the facility to the trucking public.”
