Food prices up 5.8% in July year-on-year

The cost of overseas hotel accommodations increased 28 per cent year-on-year in July, according to figures from the Department of Statistics.

According to the July Consumer Price Index, released yesterday, the cost of all goods and services in Bermuda rose 2.8 per cent year-on-year.

The price of food rose 5.8 per cent overall, with people paying 27.6 per cent more for ice cream, 23.4 per cent more for fresh and frozen lamb chops and 22.2 per cent more for dry breakfast cereals.

Motorcycle prices were up 7.3 per cent, while transportation and foreign travel prices increased 3 per cent.

Some foods were cheaper — the price of onions decreased 22 per cent, spare ribs 11.5 per cent and condensed milk 7.1 per cent.

The CPI report also showed that rent on the island increased 1.9 per cent year-on-year.

Year-on-year, the cost of pet care rose 6.1 per cent and prices in the education, recreation, entertainment and reading categories increased 3.4 per cent.

Overall, prices rose 0.4 per cent month-on-month, with fuel and power prices up 2.9 per cent

Month-on-month, the inflation rate rose 0.1 percentage points.
