Open Airways victorious in Christmas tree contest
A charity that helps people with breathing problems won this year’s Christmas tree decorating contest in Washington Mall.
For its win, Open Airways, which entered the competition for the second time, received a $3,250 donation from the QBE Foundation.
Mary Ellen Ewles, the charity’s director of operations, said: “We tried to make the tree pretty and festive, but also informative.”
The tree was adorned with tips on how people can improve their lung health, which included opening windows, replacing pillows every year and getting rid of dust mites.
Ms Ewles said most of the winning funds will go towards helping unemployed, uninsured or underinsured people pay for asthma or COPD medications.
Open Airways was not the only charity that earned funds through the contest; the $1,750 people’s choice prize, voted on by members of the public, went to Tomorrow’s Voices.
The charity, which works with children who have autism or are on the spectrum, filled its tree with the faces of some of its clients and colourful puzzle pieces.
The Menuhin Foundation music charity, which embellished its tree with musical notes and instruments, earned the $1,250 second-place prize.
The Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation had one of the most colourful trees in the competition and received $1,000 third place prize.
Other trees that stood out were the Friends of Library’s, with handmade book ornaments, and Bermuda Mental Health Foundation’s, which had decorations made by people with mental health challenges. Both organisation received a $750 contribution from QBE.
The other entrants this year, which also won $750 from QBE, were the Transformative Living Centre, Summerhaven Trust, Connectech Coding and the Carter House charity.
