Regiment soldiers share their experiences

A finance professional and a chef are encouraging residents to join the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

Corporal Melanie Gauntlett and Private Eliot Campbell are featured in videos released by the RBR.

Corporal Gauntlett, from Sandys, joined the RBR in 2018 and initially served as a medic but transitioned to the Coastguard about three years ago.

The 37-year-old investment adviser said the RBR was “extremely rewarding” and offered her more from life.

Corporal Gauntlett, a mother of two, explained: “The regiment was that outlet where I could be more than just a mom, a worker bee and a wife.

“There, I’m ‘Gauntlett’; I’m part of a bigger picture for the island as a whole.”

She urged anyone who wants to help their community and is looking for a challenge “that sets your soul on fire” to join the RBR.

Corporal Gauntlett added: “You get to see the whole community, across the board; you see everyone out on the water. It’s what we do as Bermudians.

“That transition has been more fulfilling than I think I expected.”

She also mentioned how being in the Coastguard has affected her daughters, aged 7 and 11. “They’re seeing the example that I’m setting. They know that mommy goes out in her super-suit and helps Bermuda.”

Private Campbell, 39, joined the RBR earlier this year, having wanted to do so since moving to Bermuda from New Jersey.

The father of two, who is married to a Bermudian, said: “I love being in the field, holding a weapon, going out in the woods.

“Being out with a crew of people, at first you don’t know them well but then you create a bond – I like that.”

According to Private Campbell, who works as a chef at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the RBR means “discipline, joining something that is bigger than yourself and applying your time”.

He said people should join the regiment to push themselves further and added: “If you feel like your day-to-day is boring and you just need something to pick you up and take you off your feet, the regiment is something like that.”

All Bermuda residents between the 18 and 52 years of age can apply for the next RBR recruitment camp, which will run from February 11 to 23.
