Government teams up with Ignite to boost blue economy
The Government has teamed up with an entrepreneurial development programme with the aim of boosting the blue economy.
The Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme is working with Ignite Bermuda on the pilot initiative to offer an opportunity to three entrepreneurs looking to develop businesses associated with ocean resources to take part.
The pilot will start in the first quarter when the Ignite Accelerator Programme begins accepting applications for its first cohort of the year.
Cheryl-Ann Mapp, the BOPP’s blue economy specialist, said: “We are looking to support the local community and support diversification within the economy.
“We see this partnership with Ignite as a way to build the pipeline of blue economy business opportunities.”
Ignite aims to support innovators in growing and scaling up their businesses and organisations. It provides an entrepreneurship curriculum, a local coaching and mentoring network, and the co-creation of a formalised, youth-focused curriculum alongside community partners.
Ignite has more than 300 graduates. Its free, five-month Accelerator Programme is open to all local entrepreneurs and community leaders, and offers business development opportunities.
“The term blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and increased jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems,” a government statement said.
“Bermuda’s Blue Economy Strategy aims to facilitate sustainable fisheries, expand sustainable marine tourism, accelerate the clean energy transition and increase blue investment and blue technologies on the island.”
Blue entrepreneurs include those launching or developing businesses that tackle challenges facing the ocean including those resulting from climate change, promote the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and support ocean health and protection.
Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, said: “The collaboration between the BOPP and Ignite Bermuda is an early win for Bermuda’s Blue Economy Strategy. The programme is a chance to support traditional sustainable livelihoods based on Bermuda’s invaluable ocean.”
Sean Reel, the executive director of the Accelerator Programme, added: “It is an honour for Ignite to have been selected as a partner on this key initiative for Bermuda. New jobs and opportunities are vital to the future as is a sustainable environment.”
Applications for the Ignite Accelerator Programme open online on January 15, with a February 2 deadline.
Anyone interested can learn more at www.ignitebermuda.com. In addition, Ignite will host an open house on January 24 at 5.30pm to provide an opportunity for those interested in the programme to ask questions.
