Furniture giveaway leaves mother ‘almost in tears’
A mother of two was emotional after receiving free furniture from the Fairmont Southampton.
Deneca Zuill, the community team leader at Family Centre, said the woman, who is a client of the charity, almost asked the bank for a loan to buy beds for her two daughters.
Ms Zuill added: “When I reached out to let her know about this initiative, she was almost in tears because at a moment when she felt she didn’t feel she had any other option, another option was given to her, without putting herself into debt, to be able to meet the basic needs of her children.”
According to Ms Zuill, nine other families that are clients of the charity have received furniture, which the hotel began donating to charities last month, and four of its clients were able to completely refurbish their homes.
She explained: “We have three more families who are still looking to receive furniture who were not able to receive in December, so we were able to assist ten families and counting.”
The hotel has donated furniture to more than 50 charities, churches and rest homes.
It said: “This initiative underscores the hotel’s commitment to both sustainability and community support.
“Our aim with this giveaway was to find a meaningful use for furniture that we no longer require, helping those in need within our community.”
Sheelagh Cooper, the chairwoman of Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda, said the charity received enough furniture to fill five living rooms and bedrooms.
She explained that furniture not sold or given away at the organisation’s store on Front Street would be used to furnish a residential care centre at Somerset Bridge.
The centre, which will be at the old St James Church rectory, will provide housing and around-the-clock care to patients with long-term mental health conditions.
The remaining furniture will be available to the general public beginning on January 23.
