Curb embraces National Day of Racial Healing
A charity dedicated to tackling racism on the island will join in the global recognition of the National Day of Racial Healing on February 6.
Citizens Uprooting Racism Bermuda announced that it would host a series of free events to mark the occasion.
“The National Day of Racial Healing presents an opportunity for the entire community to unite against racism, bias, inequity and injustice,” it said.
“Curb invites individuals and organisations to engage in activities, events or strategies that foster healing and address these critical issues in Bermudian society.”
As part of the recognition day, the charity will host a series of keynote speeches, interactive activities and student-led debates at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute between 8.30am and 3pm.
The charity will also host an “evening showcase” at BUEI designed around La Pieta, a painting by Bermudian artist Richard Sutton
It said: “Richard Sutton’s La Pieta serves as a visceral commentary on violence and its profound impact on Bermuda's community.
“This artwork acts as a catalyst, sparking conversations on grief, loss and identity, resonating deeply amid the ongoing tragic losses to violence on the island.
“Experience the emotive resonance of La Pieta as it comes to life through a captivating re-enactment.
“Following this, hear first-hand testimonies from courageous mothers associated with Mother’s On a Mission, sharing their lived experiences of losing sons to gang violence.”
Events will conclude with a segment dedicated to explore ways to turn shared heartache into healing.
The evening session is scheduled to run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
