Belco has trimmed back a tree near Flatts that was causing a potential safety hazard to passing traffic and pedestrians.

The Ministry of Public Works contacted the utility company earlier this week after The Royal Gazette highlighted a social media post showing branches hanging over the road.

The post on Facebook group MAJ’s List said: “The Mexican pepper trees have grown into the road and passing trucks are knocking off branches, making it dangerous for pedestrians and vehicles.

“I'm hoping someone can assist before there's any accidents.”

When contacted this week, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works told the Gazette that the tree opposite Fielder’s Lane on Middle Road on the approach to Flatts Village was the responsibility of Belco.

It said: “Recognising the situation's urgency and the potential risk to motorists, the Ministry of Public Works has contacted Belco to address the issue in the spirit of collaboration and our commitment to public safety.

“Should there be any unforeseen delays in Belco’s ability to address the matter promptly, the Ministry of Public Works is prepared to take necessary steps to ensure the timely trimming of the tree.”

Belco has since confirmed that the tree was trimmed.

UPDATE: this story has been amended to include the fact that Belco has now trimmed the tree
