Pro-Palestinian documentary to be screened at BUEI

A controversial documentary film that criticises Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is to be screened at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on Sunday.

Israelism follows two American Jews as they learn about the conflict and come to revise their views. The film also includes interviews with academics and political activists, and raises questions about the way the history of the conflict is taught in America’s Jewish community.

Released last year, some screenings of Israelism at universities and other venues in the United States and Canada were cancelled after an online campaign accusing it of anti-Semitism. Screenings were later reinstated after criticism from academic and civil liberty groups.

According to a statement, the screening has been organised by an unnamed “collective of concerned Bermudian residents of many faiths and backgrounds who are calling for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and the safe release of both Palestinian and Israeli hostages”.

The same group were behind a pro-Palestinian rally on the steps of City Hall last November, which was organised in the wake of Israel's military response to the Hamas terrorist attack in which more than 1,000 Israeli citizens, foreign nationals and security forces were killed, and about 250 taken hostage.

The documentary will be screened at the BUEI auditorium on Sunday between 4pm and 6pm. Entry is free, but capacity is limited and will be managed on a first-come basis
