The sounds of Bob Marley could be heard at Somerset Primary’s assembly hall as students celebrated the music legend yesterday afternoon.

“In recognition of music appreciation and also Black History, we just figured we would combine the two and honour such a legend as Bob Marley — since his music is so well known,” said Carla Emery, Somerset Primary’s art teacher.

“Also, with the launch of the One Love film that’s about to come out, we also thought it would be a good time to feature something like this here as well. And, of course, we know it’s Bob Marley’s birthday today,” Ms Emery added.

The assembly hall was filled with Bob Marley T-shirts and green, yellow and red T-shirts worn by students. The afternoon started with a prayer and was then followed by guest artists Desta Zion Wilson and Rivah performing Marley’s Get Up Stand Up with the upper-school choir.

Several students made presentations on Marley’s background and the history of reggae. The P1 class sang Every Little Thing with their hand-crafted instruments.

“For the music component of it, students were supposed to make their own musical instrument that they would find in a reggae band, and the music instrument had to work. They just couldn’t just draw a picture and cut it out,” Ms Emery said.

Within minutes of the first few ballads of each song, there was a sea of movement from the front to the back of the assembly hall. Primary students from P1 up to P5 performed different Bob Marley songs including Every Little Thing, Could You Be Loved, Jammin’, No Woman No Cry, Buffalo Soldier, and So Much Trouble in the World during the afternoon.

Ms Emery noted that there will be several upcoming events for the primary school.

“We have Spring into the Arts, which is coming up in the next couple of months, as well as the student art show at City Hall,” she said.
