Late Bermudian model memorialised in charity rebrand
A charity has been named after a Bermudian model who died six years ago in a motorcycle crash.
Top Model UK's non-profit wing is now The Sophie Foundation, in honour of Sophie Fraser-Smith, who lost her life in 2017.
“I think she would feel very honoured,” Sophie’s mother, Lisa, said.
Ms Fraser-Smith said: “I’m proud of her for having made such an impact that the Top Model agency would like to rebrand their charity in Sophie’s name.
“I am a proud mom, and I feel honoured to have this happen.”
Sophie Fraser-Smith died on July 20, 2017, after a Dunkley’s delivery truck veered into her lane and collided with her head-on as she rode past Heron Bay Primary School on Middle Road in Southampton. She was 21 years old.
The driver, Clinton Smith, was convicted of causing death by careless driving the next year.
Ms Fraser-Smith said that her daughter did runway shows with Top Model UK several times in 2011 before moving to Britain a year later for work.
She added that, after her daughter died, the creative director of Top Model UK visited her to ask permission to rename Top Model’s charity wing after her daughter.
“I was honoured,” Ms Fraser-Smith said. “I was always thinking about doing something in Sophie’s name, so this seemed like a good idea, especially because it’s a charity.
“It kind of goes along with Sophie and her personality.”
The Sophie Foundation, previously called The Top Model Foundation, offers funds to sick children and children in need.
It is connected to the Top Model fashion-themed reality television show, which takes the form of a modelling competition where the winner is signed to an agency.
The show, which grew internationally from America’s New Top Model, has been seen in more than 120 countries.
Ms Fraser-Smith said that her daughter was a quiet but caring girl who enjoyed painting and fighting environmental problems alongside modelling.
She said she was amazed by how funny and impactful her daughter was, being as reserved as she was.
Ms Fraser-Smith added: “She had an entrepreneurial mind and was very interested in environmental sustainability.
“Because she was still modelling, she was going to try and mesh the two together. She was talking about only modelling for sustainable companies, like those that used organic cotton and bamboo.
“She was loving, caring, kind. I just don’t know any bad things about her.”
Geoff Cox, the executive producer of Top Model Worldwide, said that Sophie and her mother were “an integral part of the Top Model family” and close personal friends, with Sophie having attended his wedding and looked after his cat.
Mr Cox said: “We present an annual award in her honour, 'The Sophie Fraser-Smith Pride and Inspiration Award', and, as the charity grew, renaming it in her honour seemed the most appropriate legacy for her memory.”
He added: “We have been in constant contact with Sophie's mum, Lisa, throughout the process, and are honoured to have Sophie's name at the forefront of our charitable work.”
The Sophie Foundation is operated by volunteers and donates all of its funds to target causes.
