Repair work under way at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
Repairs are under way at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse to fix a mechanical malfunction in its engine.
The Department of Marine and Ports Services is working on the electrical gearbox motor after the light ceased rotating.
It said: “Earlier this week, the light ceased rotating due to a mechanical malfunction in the engine, prompting its immediate shutdown.
“The Department of Marine and Ports Services has since removed the motor and started rebuilding it while procuring parts from overseas distributors.
“Due to the motor's age, the department is unable to provide a definitive completion date. However, efforts are under way.
“The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse holds significant cultural importance and is an iconic landmark in Bermuda. We are dedicated to restoring it to full operation."
The lighthouse, in Southampton, was inoperable for 11 days last summer owing to a broken light bulb.
Navigation warnings are available on the Marine and Ports website.
