Trash fire at Tynes Bay

An early-morning fire broke out in a bunker at the Tynes Bay Incinerator in Devonshire, according to the Ministry of Public Works.

The facility was closed today to commercial operators, but the public drop-off of waste has remained running.

The fire, which the ministry said was “not uncommon”, coincided with a crane used for incineration going offline after a supporting wire snapped.

The ministry said the fire had been brought under control with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service called as a precaution.

As of 4.30pm, the fire was said to be “still smouldering” and would require continued remediation, which could only be effectively once the crane was up and running.

The device’s grab unit was said to be out of commission but removed from the bunker, while the crane itself was back in service.

The collection of commercial waste is expected to resume tomorrow morning.

The ministry thanked the public as staff work to resume normal operations “as soon as possible“.
