Tall ship to berth in Hamilton
Two Bermudians sailing the world will be returning to the island for three days.
Rachael Betschart and Nicholas Hands are among 50 young people taking part in the Class Afloat programme on board the three-masted Alexander von Humboldt II.
Participants in this programme take accredited high school or university-level courses while sailing on the tall ship.
Both Ms Betschart and Mr Hands graduated high school last year and are doing the programme during their gap year. Ms Betschart graduated from Warwick Academy and Mr Hands from Mount Saint Agnes.
The 65-metre vessel has visited several ports — including ports in Morocco, Brazil and the Dominican Republic — since leaving Germany in September.
The ship, which visited Bermuda last year, left Cuba on February 21 and is scheduled to berth along Front Street today.
She will leave the island on March 3.
An open ship event on Friday and an information session at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club this weekend will offer an introduction to the ship and the programme, which is open to students in grades 11 and 12, in their first year of university, or who are taking a gap year.
Friday’s open ship will be held from 4pm until sunset, and Sunday’s information session is scheduled from 4pm to 6pm.
