Reports: Chubb underwrites $91 million bond in Trump appeal
A Bermuda-founded company has been linked to a $91 million bond put forward by Donald Trump as he seeks to appeal a defamation suit in New York.
It was reported last week that the former US President posted a $91.63 million bond as he appeals the judgment against him in the E Jean Carroll defamation case.
Multiplemediaoutletsreported that Chubb, which was founded on the island and has offices on Woodbourne Avenue, underwrote the bond for Mr Trump.
Under the terms of the bond, Chubb will only secure the appeal of the $83.3 million judgment handed down earlier this year, not any future appeals.
In a statement published by CNN, a Chubb spokesperson declined to comment on the details of the bond.
“As a matter of policy, we do not comment on client-specific information,” the spokesperson said. “Our surety division provides appeal bonds in the normal course of business.
“These bonds are an ordinary and important part of the American justice system, protecting the rights of both defendants and plaintiffs.”
Ms Carroll, a former columnist for Elle magazine, launched a defamation case against Mr Trump after he accused her of lying about rape allegations related to an incident in the Nineties.
