Two Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers shared public-order techniques at a training course in Barbados last month.

The training was part of a Regional Security System programme, where the soldiers were given an opportunity to teach public-order techniques to police, prison and defence personnel from six Caribbean countries.

Participants were from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and St Lucia.

The RBR said that the two soldiers first delivered revision lessons to students who participated in a public-order course run by the regiment last year.

“Participants also worked on instructional techniques and lesson preparation before being assigned roles and responsibilities they would take on in the delivery of a basic public-order course to 21 students from across eight RSS partner nations,” the RBR said.

During the training, the RBR team coached and mentored participants as instructors trained the group in containment and crowd dispersal.

Colour Sergeant Sergio White, from Warwick, who was a member of the RBR training team, highlighted the importance of delivering concise lessons.

“The points to get across are for the students to think about safety first, to trust in their equipment and to look out for the individuals around them,” he said.

The 39-year-old, a gym owner, said he was “very impressed” with how the group performed. “The ten that we picked definitely rose to the level of good instructors.

“They were getting their points across, looking more and more confident in what they were teaching and doing,” he added.

The Regional Security System programme was established more than 40 years ago as a response to security threats. It ensures the stability and wellbeing of member states. It also maximises regional security for the preservation of social and economic development.

Senior Sergeant Alvin Titus, of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, took part in the public-order training last year. He returned this year and said he was happy to gain new knowledge as well as deliver the course to the next cohort.

He highlighted the importance of “aligning procedures across RSS member states”, the RBR said.

“It’s very important that we have the same standard, that we are all on the same page in terms of how we deliver public service to the citizens of our countries,” Senior Sergeant Titus said.
