A parish council this week celebrated the closing of a month of successful community activities.

The Southampton Parish Council started a month of events with the We Remember Golf Tournament, which honoured late members of the parish’s community.

The golf tournament, held at Port Royal Golf Course on March 2, was the first golf tournament co-hosted by Randy Raynor, a Sergeant Major with the Royal Bermuda Regiment and former member of the Southampton Rangers Cricket Club.

Stacey-Lee Williams, the Southampton City Council chairperson, said that the proceeds of the tournament had gone to the council’s scholarship fund.

She added: “As a result of our generous sponsors, an anonymous donor, and teams’ participation in the successful tournament, the council has increased its fund and can expand the number and the value of our awards when applications open later this year.”

The council also celebrated World book Day on March 7 by visiting Southampton schools to read to preschool and P1 pupils.

The youngsters had the chance to have their favourite books read to them by council members and celebrated by wearing the costumes of their favourite storybook characters.

Ms Williams said: “Looking at the faces of members, it was hard to see who enjoyed the moments more – the children or council members.”

She added that the Southampton Parish Council also donated a free book to preschool and P1 pupils of Dalton E. Tucker Primary School, the Bermuda Institute, Port Royal Primary School and the Southampton Preschool.

The Council concluded the month of activities with an Easter egg hunt on Saturday at Whale Bay Park.

More than 75 youngsters aged between two and ten years joined the hunt for 768 eggs hidden across the park.

Among the community activities, the Southampton Parish Council also held its monthly meeting on March 14.

Ms Williams thanked her team for their commitment and invited parish residents to attend its public meeting on April 25.
