Charity to host series of events for Autism Awareness Month
A charity that supports autistic clients has organised a series of events to raise funds and awareness about the condition next month.
April is Autism Awareness Month and the Tomorrow’s Voices Autism Centre is encouraging all residents to take part.
The campaign will start on April 2 — World Autism Awareness Day — with a “Lighting It Up Blue” day, when residents will be encouraged to wear blue or light up their homes with blue bulbs.
Participants are invited to take a photograph and tag @tomorrowsvoices.
On April 5, the community will have the opportunity to contribute funds through a tag day, when donation buckets will be manned across the island.
Donations can also be made on the charity’s website at tomorrowsvoices.bm.
A spokeswoman for the charity said: “Along with providing different fundraising opportunities to support the charity throughout the month, Tomorrow’s Voices will also be raising awareness about autism and the therapies that it provides through its autism centre.
“One of the highlights of the month’s activities will include the Tomorrow’s Voices training institute workshop — ‘Building Bridges: Social Development for Individuals with Autism’.
“This virtual workshop, which takes place on Wednesday, April 17, is a must-attend for those educators, health professionals, parents and others in the community that work or interact with children with autism or those with developmental disabilities.”
On April 26 the charity will host its signature event — the Annual Autism Rocks Socks Day.
Schools, corporate organisations and the community will be encouraged to wear “crazy, wacky socks” and make either a $2 or $5 donation to the charity.
Participants can show their support by posting photos to social media and tagging #autismrocks-socks or @tomorrowsvoices.
The charity will sell socks through its Sargasso store for pick up or delivery.
Events will be capped off on April 27 with the Tomorrow’s Voices social skills group, which meets twice a month with the aim to build pro-social behaviours and increase the functional life and daily living skills of children that attend the programme.
It costs $45 and is held at the Tomorrow’s Voices Centre on Middle Road, Warwick.
