A Bermuda supermarket chain has reported that it is dealing with an unspecified “cybersecurity issue”.

A spokeswoman for the Lindo’s, which has stores in Devonshire and Warwick, confirmed that staff were managing the incident but gave no further details.

The spokeswoman said: “We are currently in the midst of managing a cybersecurity issue and we are working to minimise any disruption to our customers. We appreciate the support of the community at this time.”

The confirmation comes after computer systems and phone networks at the Bermuda College were put out of action last weekend following a glitch.

A spokeswoman for the college described the shutdown as an “IT security incident” but did not confirm that it was a cyberattack.

An investigation was initiated by the college’s IT department and IT vendor. Students and staff were told then that the campus would be closed “until further notice”.

In an update yesterday, the spokeswoman said: “Good progress has been made towards restoration of the IT system, thanks to the IT department and its security partners.

“A phased return today was successful, with front-facing essential services operating as normal on campus.

“Some classes were held on campus, while others will continue to be taught remotely as wi-fi access remains limited at this point.

“The phone system, which is linked to the internet, remains out of service.”

Government Information Technology systems were targeted in a cyberattack last September. The security breach shut down some services for several months.

Initially David Burt, the Premier, claimed that the disruption came from “an external source, most likely from Russia”.

To date, the Government has refused to comment on speculation that the security breach was a ransomware attack, or whether any personal data was compromised.

Mr Burt has stated repeatedly that many details regarding the attack could not be made public because it remained under investigation.

The Premier has confirmed that a bipartisan parliamentary committee will be established to examine how systems were breached and what must be done to prevent further cyberattacks.
