Volunteers sought for Grateful Bread giveaway event
The Grateful Bread is to host a free giveaway event for those in need next Saturday, and volunteers are being invited to help.
The organisation will be handing out free toiletries, gently used clothing and shoes, toys, second-hand household and miscellaneous items in good condition.
The event takes place at St Andrew’s Church hall across from the HSBC Church street branch from 1pm to 4pm.
Volunteers are needed from about 11.30am to 5pm on April 6 for as much time as they are able to spare.
A spokeswoman for the Grateful Bread said: “There is a huge need in Bermuda for the less fortunate to receive free giveaway goods given the extremely high cost of living here. There are thousands of people in Bermuda who cannot afford to purchase basic goods. Let’s make this a successful event, spread the word to people in need.”
11.15am: trucks will take the items from Grateful Bread’s container in Mills Creek to the Church (several trips), heavy lifters are welcome to help
11.30am: volunteers set up tables organised by category and unload trucks at the church hall. Categories: men’s clothes and accessories; men’s shoes; ladies clothes and accessories; ladies’ shoes; boys clothes and accessories; boys shoes; girls’ clothes and accessories; girls’ shoes; toddler/babies’ clothes and items; children’s toys and books; household goods; miscellaneous; bedding (guests need ticket); toiletries (guests need ticket)
12.45pm: start handing out coloured tickets for bedding and toiletries to guests
1pm: event opens to guests who come and take away what they want for free.
• Tickets must be presented for bedding and toiletries and some other items. Volunteers are needed to guard tables. No ticket, no item. If they all get something and more is left over, then they can come for a second round after the line has emptied

Founded in 2017, the Grateful Bread is made up of a group of volunteers who organise the collection and free giveaways for the needy. Its mission is to “bring together Bermuda’s residents from all racial and social sector backgrounds to help heal divisions in our community”.
Bob Marley’s One Love is used as the organisation’s theme song.
The Grateful Bread collaborates with Home, the registered charity founded in 2021 whose mission is to end homelessness in Bermuda.
The spokeswoman for Grateful Bread said: “Home has successfully returned many homeless persons to meaningful, productive lives.
“The Grateful Bread supporters have so far donated $8,200 to Home and are thinking of creative ways to engage Home’s residents to do odd jobs, paid and volunteer work, at our events.”
