Travel costs up sharply in latest consumer figures
Consumers paid 3.9 per cent more overall for goods last October than they did one year previously — with food prices continuing to account for a high portion of inflation, at 4.9 per cent.
However, for the 12 months to October 2023, the transport and foreign travel sector came in top, soaring 9.1 per cent, according to the Department of Statistics.
The average cost of airfares and overseas hotel accommodations rose 32.9 per cent and 20.8 per cent respectively.
The most recent consumer price index showed fuel costs up 10 per cent between September and October 2023, as a result of the 48.5 per cent hike in the fuel adjustment rate levied by Belco.
The increase was wound back by the Regulatory Authority at the beginning of 2024.
Food rose by just 0.4 per cent for the month.
