St David’s coastguard station plan approved

Plans to turn a former post office into a new coastguard substation have been given the green light.

The Ministry of Public Works sought permission last year to convert the shuttered St David’s Post Office into a Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard station.

The plans proposed internal work along with the construction of a 114 square foot covered porch and a 490sq ft floating dock at the St David’s Road site.

The project would also involve installing 40 solar panels on the building and fencing around the site.

Concerns were raised about the location of the dock given the shallow waters in the area, but the plans were amended to move the floating dock over deeper waters.

The Marine Resources Board confirmed that the new location would not have any impact on seagrass or coral, and the Port Authority Board confirmed its approval of the plan.

A technical report by planning officials noted that the dock was larger than typically permissible, but policies do allow larger docks if the principal use is “marine-related”.

It added that it was appreciated a larger dock was required for the coastguard than those used in residential settings.

The report also said chain-link fencing along public roads was discouraged, but the planning department was aware that it would be important for the coastguard to be able to secure the property.

The St David’s Post Office was one of three closed in October 2014 as part of an effort to reduce government spending.

The conversion project was announced last March, with the planning application stating: “The location of the proposed coastguard substation was strategically selected as these eastern waters are the main port of entry for incoming marine vessels travelling to Bermuda.

“Therefore, this additional station is a necessity for effective coastguard response service for the whole island.

“The substation facility also operates as safe lodging quarters for residents in need during hurricanes, evacuations and other disasters.”
