Celebrations marking the emigration of Portuguese to Bermuda received a $5,000 donation from the Green family, owners of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

“We hope to strengthen community bonds and create a lasting legacy,” the family said in a statement.

The family said they recognised the “incredible journey” of the Portuguese community on the island.

It said this year’s celebrations “will honour all Portuguese/Bermudian history, heritage and culture, and celebrate all those who ventured to Bermuda, as well as their descendants”.

Andrew Green said: “Preserving and celebrating Bermuda’s heritage is very important to the fabric of our community. We are pleased to be able to contribute to what will be a fantastic line-up of activities to celebrate an historic milestone in Portuguese history in Bermuda.”

William Madeiros, head of fundraising for the 175th Anniversary Commemorations Committee, said: “We are honoured to have the support of the Green family for this year’s event. Donations from supporters like the Greens are vital in helping the committee to execute the upcoming events.”

Exhibitions, cultural events, educational programmes and legacy projects are among the activities planned for the event, which will be held later in the year.

Further updates for the event will be announced soon, the family said.
