Artists honoured for their work and dedication
Five artists were honoured for their work by the Bermuda Arts Council at a ceremony on Saturday.
Painter Edwin M.E. Smith and the late David K. Knight, a bandmaster with the Salvation Army, both received the council’s Lifetime Achievement award for creating “significant bodies of original work that is representative of the Bermudian spirit”.
The Founder award was presented to fashion designer Dwayne Julian Carter Paynter, and Gavin Djata Smith, the founder of the Chewstick Foundation, for standing out as pioneers in their respective art forms.
The award is given to artists who have served as mentors and role models for fellow artists and generations to follow.
Actress Lana Young received the Earl Cameron Award for her stage and television performances on the international stage, as a nominee for Most Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture for A Jazzman’s Blues. The award recognises expertise and vision.
Also honoured during Saturday’s ceremony at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium was Dame Jennifer Smith, the former premier, for her patronage of the arts.
