Pitts Bay Road building to become parking lot
A vacant building at the outskirts of Hamilton could be torn down in favour of parking spaces, according to a recent planning application.
The owners of 75 Pitts Bay Road applied for permission last year to demolish the ageing building, which was said to be “haemorrhaging money”.
According to a planning application submitted this month, the lot would be used for a ground-level parking lot with spaces for 27 cars, including electric vehicles, and seven bikes.
The Outerbridge Building, originally built in the 1950s, housed a cycle livery before becoming the Bermuda’s first office location for international insurance giant AIG.
More recently, it was home to several businesses, including the popular French bistro Bouchêe and the Bersalon Hair Salon and Day Spa, along with the charity Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.
However, the tenants were warned in late 2022 that they would need to vacate the premises.
Daina Outerbridge, a director of the company that owns the Outerbridge Building, told The Royal Gazette last year: “The building is very old and past its sell-by date.
“We don’t know what we are going to do with it right now. It has got to the point where we are not putting any more capital into the existing building.
“We are looking at and exploring different options.”
