Azorean artists in interactive exhibition next month
The National Museum of Bermuda will host an interactive art exhibition with three artists from the Azores next month.
Visitors will be able to meet and practise artistic techniques with contemporary artists Susana Aleixo Lopes, Leonor Almeida Periera and Filipe Franco at the family-friendly event.
The exhibition will be held at Commissioner’s House on June 8 from noon until 2pm.
It has the theme Alternative Voices: A Perspective on Contemporary Art from the Azores and is part of celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese emigrants to Bermuda.
The NMB said: “Participants will be able to meet the artists, dive deeper into the artwork and experiment with the techniques of collage, modelling, drawing and painting.”
It added: “All three artists are inspired by the land and ocean of their homeland, and they have created a fun art activity for all ages that connects with their artwork on display.
“The activity will explore shape, colour, texture, light and shadow using natural elements like leaves, plants, stones, sand and soil and is free with museum admission.”
Elena Strong, the museum’s executive director, said: “With contemporary art exhibits like this, NMB is providing new and unique entry points to discover Bermuda history, culture and heritage.”
She explained: “Alternative Voices connects with our permanent exhibit across the hall, Azores and Bermuda, which explores Portuguese-Bermudian history and cultural connections.”
Ms Strong added: “We hope that this new exhibit is an opportunity to engage with the artistic culture of the Azores and (re) consider the cultural ties and our shared Atlantic identity.”
