The island’s top chess players are getting ready to show their skills on the world stage.
They will make their move at the upcoming 45th World Chess Olympiad, to be held in Budapest.
The Bermuda Chess Association announced the ten men and women who will represent the island at the event, set to take place between September 10 and 23.
Serguei Gontcharov, Sami Lill, Don Dacres, Nathan Dennis, Dimitri Gontcharov, Zuzana Kovacova, Shiela Cancino, Yasmin Flanagan, Kaelyn Fleming and Olga Gontcharova will all wave Bermuda’s flag in the Hungarian capital.
The competitors are training under grandmasters Andrei Maksimenko and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic.
This year’s competition will mark a milestone for competitive chess as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of Fide, the International Chess Federation.
Nigel Freeman, head of the delegation, said: “We are immensely proud of our players, who exemplify dedication, strategic brilliance and the spirit of competition.
“Competing in Budapest during Fide’s centenary is a monumental honour, and we are ready to showcase Bermuda’s chess prowess on the world stage.”
