Comedians impress at open-mike night
Seven comedians showcased their talents in front of a supportive audience when the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society held its first open-mike Comedy Night.
The BMDS said each comedian brought a unique style to the stage at the May 17 event at the Daylesford Theatre.
The event was devised by Will Kempe, the BMDS drama committee chairman, in conjunction with local comedian Jonathan Young.
Meredith Andrews, Stuart Burton, Adam Champion, Brendon Fourie, Brock Noseworthy, Richard Prior and Britten West showcased their talents in five-minute sets at the show, which was hosted by Mr Young and comedian Eddie G.
The BMDS said the event provided a platform for the creatives to test materials developed during a stand-up comedy workshop series administered by Mr Young.
Mr Young said: “I’ve seen a lot of stand-up comedy open-mike nights and this one was amazing with a high hit rate for such new comedians.”
He added: “BMDS was a wonderful venue for stand-up and you could not find a more supportive audience than this one. I hope we can do more shows there.”
Mr Kempe said the BMDS was always on the lookout for new ways to foster the performing arts.
“We hope to host more events like this to engage the general public and welcome new faces into the Daylesford Theatre.
“We remain an open and welcoming society and would love to receive feedback on what programmes we can introduce to bring new people through our doors.”
While the show was ongoing, BMDS member Lisa Maule co-ordinated a team of teenagers in the booth, running lights and sound, while producer Rebekah Nebard ran the backstage collective of first-time performers.
