The lone occupant of a fishing boat escaped without injury after a single-vessel crash along the shoreline at St David’s on Saturday night.

According to a police spokesman, the boat hit the coastline at about 9pm.

The spokesman said: “It appears that the boat involved ran aground when the operator attempted to dock during low tide in the Smith’s Sound, St David’s, area.”

The police, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, as well as coastguard staff responded.

Bermuda Maritime Operations was also informed, with a spokesman telling The Royal Gazette that the vessel may have been “going at speed” at the time of the crash.

Investigations have so far determined that the vessel was stuck in autopilot mode at the time of the collision, the maritime official said.

He said some had suggested that the vessel might have been travelling “too fast” on autopilot.

The vessel was removed from the site and taken to the St George’s Boatyard yesterday afternoon.

The maritime official said the owner would notify the authorities whether he planned to repair or salvage the vessel.
